My Bio

Robert, a native of Orinda, California, is entering his first full year teaching at San Tan Charter after helping coach basketball for the Roadrunners for the past three seasons, and teaching math this past spring at the Power Campus. He grew up in a family of educators and coaches, including his dad starting his career as a high school athletic director, basketball and soccer coach, before spending 37 years as the Head Men’s Golf Coach at Cal Berkeley, and his mom coached boys and girls volleyball, girls basketball and followed his dad as the Athletic Director at the prestigious College Preparatory School in Oakland, CA (College Prep). Robert played many sports growing up before focusing on basketball and golf while attending College Prep in high school, winning back-to-back league championships and MVPs in golf his junior and senior year, as well as being awarded the Oakland Chamber of Commerce Athlete of the Year Award in 2003 for the combination of his his success in the classroom, as well as on the basketball and golf teams his senior year. Robert went on to attend Northern Michigan University where he earned his degree in Electronic Journalism and Marketing, and was a 5-year member of the Men’s Golf Team, earning a scholarship as a walk-on while representing the team on the NCAA’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Robert worked in sports information in the athletic department all five years in school for the football, volleyball, basketball and hockey teams, worked at a local radio station doing basketball and baseball play-by-play, and was also the sports anchor for the school’s student-run Public Eye News station, airing a 15-minute live news broadcast each day on campus.

Following graduation, Robert spent several years working in professional and amateur sports, including public relations for the Minnesota Wild organization (National Hockey League), marketing and promotions for Academy Sports and Outdoors, and community/public relations for the Minnesota United (Major League Soccer). From there, Robert moved on from working in sports and moved to the corporate world, working for State Farm while coaching youth basketball in Minnesota for several years. In 2016 Robert and his wife, Crystal, moved to Arizona and Robert went back to school, earning his Master’s in Business Administration in 2018 from Grand Canyon University while working in public relations for the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction Company. Following graduation, Robert went to work at GoDaddy and also resumed coaching basketball at that time, connecting with San Tan Varsity Basketball Coach and Teacher Kyli Crooms to coach for the UH Elite Basketball Club. Robert has spent the last several years as Assistant Director of UH Elite as the club has grown into one of the top club programs on the west coast, and joined the San Tan Basketball Staff in 2021-22 as the JV Coach, before being promoted to Varsity Assistant in 2022-23 and helped coach the Roadrunners to the 2024 2A State Championship.

Robert and Crystal currently live in Gilbert with their daughter, Brielle, and dogs Nala and Finn. Robert also has an older sister, Kim, who lives with her husband in Chandler, Arizona.
