Tauscher Times 4.21.26

Dear Roadrunner,

This week gives us a perfect opportunity to slow down for a moment and reflect on something bigger than a test score, a game, or even a school year. On Wednesday, we recognize Earth Day on campus. This day is a simple reminder that what we’ve been given matters, and what we leave behind matters even more.

That idea sits at the heart of something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately—what does it mean to truly “leave it better”?

That mindset connects directly to what we are building here at San Tan.

When our students walk into a classroom, they have a chance to leave it better with their effort, their attitude, and their engagement. When our teachers plan a lesson, they have a chance to leave it better through clarity, passion, and high expectations.

When we show up as a school community, we have a chance to leave it better for each other.

San Tan Charter is the best small school in the East Valley not because we say it, but because of what we do every day.

Earth Day Reflection

Howard Tauscher pioneered sustainable forestry techniques

The original “Papa T” (photo profile from American Forests Magazine) was a pioneering figure in the Pacific Northwest known for practicing sustainable forestry long before it was widely accepted.

At a time when clear-cutting forests was the norm, he took a different path. He believed in preserving and renewing the land, planting tens of thousands of trees and harvesting selectively to ensure long-term sustainability. Though initially mocked for his methods, his approach proved visionary. Decades later, his land yielded greater value than traditional timber operations in the region and the Seattle Times honored him with an obituary of his life.

Howard Tauscher Obituary

Known for relentless work ethic, independence, and deep respect for nature, he continued working the land well into his 80s. Beyond his professional legacy, he was remembered as both strong and gentle a man who quietly lived out his belief in taking care of what he was given.
