Special Education Home-Based Instruction

During these unprecedented times, the San Tan Charter School Special Education Department leans on our collaborative partnership now more than ever. In these initial weeks of home-based instruction, our goal is to engage students and families in the learning process, while providing some consistency and personalized connections. San Tan Charter School’s Special Education Department will continue to respond to and incorporate the guidance of our state and federal agencies, as we define the new normal of special education services in a home-based learning world. Throughout these weeks ahead, we encourage you to reach out to us with your questions and concerns. We will do our best in this time of uncertainty to problem-solve with and/for you and your child.

There will be different resources to support students with disabilities and address IEP goals and objectives to the greatest extent possible during these ever-evolving circumstances. Your child’s special education teacher will work collaboratively with general education colleagues to provide access to the home-based instruction opportunities. This may occur through adjustment to instruction and resources while providing needed accommodations and modifications.

Finally, during these initial weeks of home-based learning, we will be defining our related service delivery implementation. Your case manager/special education teacher will be in touch with you to discuss these developments.

We thank you for your continued communication, support, understanding, and flexibility. We care about your child and are invested in each student’s success.

The purpose of our initial elementary Home-Based Instruction Plan is to provide continuity of learning for our students. Google Classroom will be the platform used to engage our elementary school students in home-based instruction. Over time, other Google apps may be used as part of the home-based learning experience for students.

Our elementary school teachers will be providing a general overview of the proposed plan for their specific class during this first phase of implementation. Each teacher will post daily work through a teacher message, personally connecting with students and providing clarity of work. This will be posted by 9:00 AM a weekly on Google Classroom. As we launch this platform for learning, this work is intended to review previously taught concepts that students should be able to complete with limited adult support. However, should students need assistance, teachers will be posting “office hours” from 9am-3pm, when they will be available for clarifications and questions.

During these uncertain times, it is important to promote social and emotional connections between your child and their teacher. Therefore your child’s teacher will be reaching out periodically to maintain personal connections along the way.

Routines can provide consistency and a sense of security for children during periods of disruption. We encourage you to consider the plans below as a possible option to provide structure for your child while we are participating in home-based instruction. If possible, please involve your child in the creation of their daily schedule, as bringing them into the planning will increase ownership and a joy for learning. Consider the importance of finding a balance between using technology and engaging in unplugged learning experiences (cooking, crafts, exploring nature, etc.).

Google Classroom will be the platform used to engage our middle school students in home-based instruction. Over time, other Google apps may be used as part of the home-based instruction experience for students.

Our middle school teachers will be providing a general overview of the proposed plan for their specific class during this first phase of implementation. Each teacher will post daily work through a teacher message, personally connecting with students and providing clarity of work. This will be posted by 9:00 AM weekly on Google Classroom. As we launch this platform for learning, this work is intended to review previously taught concepts that students should be able to complete with limited adult support. However, should students need assistance, teachers will be posting “office hours” from 9am-3pm, when they will be available for clarifications and questions.

During this first phase, the continuity of learning inclusive of content, and student work time (including homework) will not exceed 30 minutes/day for each course. Over the course of this initial implementation of home-based learning, teachers will be checking for student understanding and completion of work. It is expected that students will participate in the daily work and electronically submit assignments, as needed. All of our teachers will keep track of student work and will provide timely feedback to students.

Teachers will do their best to provide all required resources in an online format through Google Classroom, along with any necessary supplemental materials such as independent reading, reflection protocols, and/or reference to textbooks.
