6th Grade Math / HS Science Teacher

My Bio

¡Hola! Hello.  ¡Bienvenidos! Welcome.  My name is Zelda Montoya and am overjoyed with the opportunity to teach 6th grade Science and Math at San Tan Charter School (STCS).  I have a 4-year-old son who will be attending the Montessori School and who is larger than life.  I taught 1 year as a full time teacher but have 6 years of overall teaching experience and took a short break to pursue my dream job of working with marine animals.

I grew up in Texas and attended high school in New Jersey.  I decided to go back to Texas for my higher education where in 2007 I received a Bachelor of Science with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Texas at El Paso.  I then moved to Dallas where I taught 8th grade Science to at-risk students who taught me just as much, if not more than I taught them.  While teaching I volunteered weekends at a local aquarium.  I later accepted a full time aquarist position at the Children’s Aquarium which I called home for 7.5 years.  I got to work with some of the most knowledgeable people in the aquatic industry and crazy, wicked, cool animals.  I would embrace the aquatic industry and develop my first aquarium based research project which lead to my first published paper, The Creation of the World’s First Peanut Butter and Jellyfish

After, the birth of my son I moved to Abilene where my husband was stationed in the United States Air Force.  After, 6 years my husband decided to separate from the military and this would bring us out to Phoenix, Arizona late 2016.  I decided to start working again so my husband could pursue higher education degree at Arizona State University.  I took a job as a Senior Animal Care Specialist at Odysea Aquarium in Scottsdale, Arizona where I got to develop, mentor and experience a lot more time with some of most amazing and beautiful aquatic creatures that our world has to offer.  During this time, I began to search for a school that would challenge my son’s energy level and active curiosity to learn everything.  I came across San Tan Charter School and couldn’t be more grateful.

I love teaching because I am passionate about encouraging people never let things hold them back and possibilities are endless if we don’t limit ourselves.  I especially love the challenge of swaying kids to love Science via creative mediums. Science and Math have a bad reputation because people feel it’s hard to grasp or it doesn’t relate to them, where it is quite the contrary both Science and Math are in everything.  I also believe anyone can overcome and do anything they put their minds to but nothing is give, it must be earned. “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”

When I am not teaching, I enjoy hanging out with my family and friends, working out, playing tennis, swimming, and watching movies.  You will find me out on the dance floor if Latin music is playing, teaching D.I.Y. wood work classes and listening to music.  I am ecstatic about meeting and getting to know my new students and their families.  I have faith that this year will be energetic and successful in expanding student minds.  Can’t wait!
