Heidi Simpson

1st Grade Teacher

My Bio

Hi! My name is Heidi Simpson and I am excited to be teaching first grade this year at SanTan.

I was born and raised in a Chicago suburb. I have always wanted to be a teacher. As a young girl, I would set up a “school” in my parents garage every summer where neighborhood families would send their kids to learn and play. When I graduated high school, my family moved to Arizona where I attended Arizona State University.

I graduated from ASU with a B.A. in education with special education certification. I have endorsements in learning disabilities and behavior disorders.

Upon graduating, I started teaching in the Gilbert Unified School District. I taught in both self-contained settings and in full inclusion. My time in full inclusion was spent team teaching in the general education setting. I became interested in autism and reaching this population of students. I helped create and taught in Gilbert’s first autism specific program. While I taught students, I began teaching classes for both parents and teachers (thru the district and at SARRC). I had the opportunity to leave GPS and start my own company consulting in many school districts across the valley.

I was an autism and behavior consultant for 10 years. My passion has always been working with students. I love watching the excitement of a student as they learn a new skill and the confidence that comes with it. When my children were small, I decided to be a stay at home mom and help them learn and grow. Last year, I was feeling a pull back to the classroom and an opportunity became available for me to take over a position in second grade at SanTan. My children have attended SanTan for 9 years so I felt right at home.

I am excited to move downstairs to first grade. I feel a sense of responsibility as one of the first teachers that a student will encounter in their school career. My goal is to teach of course, but to also instill a love of learning and confidence going to second grade. I believe that all students have limitless potential.

I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have a 14 year old son and a 9 year old daughter (both attend Santan). When I have free time I love to spend time with my family, watch my kids’ in their sports and music activities, work in my garden, go up north to the cooler weather, travel, cook, watch movies, and sing.
